What is gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a very common sexually transmitted disease (STD) which is caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae that grows and multiplies very easily in warm and moist areas of the reproductive system. In women gonorrhea grows and develops in the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) and in the urethra (urine canal). In men, the bacterium that causes gonorrhea spreads within the urethra. The bacterium can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus.
